Scope and Contents

Experiences on the North Dakota and Minnesota prairies; work experiences in Minneapolis; involvement with farmer cooperatives; farmer resistance around Montevideo during the Depression; March on the state capitol in 1933; discussion of Floyd Olson, John Bosch, Harry Haugland, Franklin D. Roosevelt. Axel Mattson was born March 29, 1886, in Cokato, Wright County, where he lived for twenty years. After teaching country school for two years in North Dakota, he moved to Minneapolis and held several jobs. Mattson moved to Goodhue County in 1920 to farm, then to Buffalo, Minnesota to do highway maintenance work in 1933. He retired in 1954 after 19 years with the Livestock Weighing Department. A member of the State Board of Education of the Farmer's Union, Mr. Mattson has been active in the Farmer's Union since the 1920's.
